Yellow Italian granite in honed, flamed, and sandblasted finishes were used for the Aratani Central Hall wall, reminiscent of the Historic Building’s exterior. Cleft-finished red Indian sandstone constituted the wall on First Street that borders the Hirasaki Family Garden. The two walls, evoking the two waves of JANM’s mark, come together at the JANM Board Room and Museum Store, symbolizing the fusion of Japanese and American influences. I've been going to the House of Tokyo since it first opened a little ways from where it stands now. The owners are extremely hospitable and care immensely about the food they present to their guests.... The owner is great and always greets us with a smile, the chefs are fun and entertaining, the food portions are generous in size and you always leave with an overly full belly and usually a take home box...

A spring-themed menu inspired by American and Japanese cuisine and decor evocative of a koi pond were all features of Wednesday night's White House state dinner honoring Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife. Since its reopening back in October, you’ve no doubt seen friends flooding to Japan. Where to stay in Tokyo, since your hotel or Airbnb will more than likely dictate your travel experience. The mural is intended to represent, celebrate, challenge, and preserve different concepts within the Japanese American culture, both contemporary and historic, while connecting with the diverse community around JANM. The mural depicts a young girl, clothed in several furoshiki, a traditional Japanese cloth often used to carry, cover, and protect objects, most often gifts.

Part of a Tokyo-based franchise, Yodaya builds and rents out traditional Japanese-style guesthouses that allow you to live like a local in Japan. The highlight is the garden terrace with an open-air bathroom, complete with a wooden bath and a rainforest shower. Next to the house is an outpost for Luup, an e-bike sharing service provider—perfect for exploring Asakusa. The home’s convenient location also makes it easy to check out other popular parts of Tokyo like Ginza, Ueno, and Akihabara. It’s Italy by way of Japan at the Bulgari Hotel Tokyo, which just opened its doors in central Tokyo right across from Tokyo Station, a transport hub with access to locations like Kyoto and Osaka on the shinkansen (the bullet train).
But there are options for mere mortals as well, from the chocolates and macarons at La Boutique to the takeaway beef curry at the on-site cafe. A driveway connects to a loading dock at the north side of the Pavilion. Hidden away in an area full of office buildings near Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace, Hoshinoya Tokyo doesn’t look like much from the outside. When guests enter, they are asked to slip off their shoes and are provided with a pair of socks, slippers, and a traditional yukata robe that is worn for the rest of their stay. At the top floor of the property is a traditional onsen, fed by a mineral-rich hot spring deep below the city. Multicourse kaiseki meals are served in your hotel room or in the restaurant, which has private dining spaces. Guests can experience traditional Japanese culture—learn how to make tea, practice the ancient art of swordsmanship—or simply indulge in luxurious massages. Should you wish to emerge into the modern world, an Edo Meister is on hand to plan your journey, and a rickshaw driver can guide you around town.

In 2005, JANM received a federal grant to complete the construction of the Democracy Center as an addition to JANM’s Historic Building. The project added 9,800 square feet to the existing 23,800 square feet in the renovated historic Nishi Hongwanji Temple building and included the creation of the 198-seat Tateuchi Democracy Forum theater and the Democracy Lab. “In designing the courtyard and garden for the Pavilion, I drew inspiration from the ancient and sacred tradition of stone, from the stone walls and megaliths in Europe to the stone gardens of Japan,” Murase revealed. He also was inspired by the work of the late Japanese American sculptor and landscape designer, Isamu Noguchi.
